Positions on a Towboat

A towboat and group of barges, referred to as the tow, transits up and down the Inland Waterway System moving bulk freight to ports all over the United States. 

Positions on the towboat include captain, pilot, engineer, deck crew, tankerman, and cook. Most people in these positions live aboard towboats with work cycles anywhere from 30 to 21-day hitches with equal amounts of time at home. While on the towboat, a watch system of 6 hours on and 6 hours off applies. The towboat works 365/24/7 year-round.

Career Description: Responsible for operating a river towboat in the transportation of commodities on the inland river system, including supervision of the crew, maintaining the boat in a safe and seaworthy condition, navigation of the boat on the forward watch, administration of company policy and adherence to all applicable laws and regulations.

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow safety and work-related instructions.
  • Ability to plan extended menus and order appropriate supplies within budgetary requirements
  • Required to live aboard a vessel for your rotation. Schedules vary and can be 28 on and 28 off or 28 on and 14 off.

Shipyard and Repair Facility / Maintenance Positions

Government  & Conservation Careers

Government positions include an array of jobs along the rivers. These positions help protect, defend, build, and conserve the rivers as a natural resource to the nation. These jobs help ensure a healthy river that also flows smoothly for commerce and the safety of communities.  Some positions include a forester, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, marine science officer with the Coast Guard, cyber systems with the Coast Guard.
