Quote on How or Why you are involved with RWD:
We are involved with RiverWorks Discovery because their mission to educate communities about the commerce, culture, conservation, and careers of the great rivers of America and their watersheds fits directly with our core values: People, Planet, Property, Performance. At Turn Services, we believe that outreach to our youth about the importance of the Mississippi River and associated careers must begin early. When elementary and middle school students participate in RWD, we are able to plant the seeds about being a good steward to the waterways and bring awareness to students and their teachers of maritime careers. When we fast forward to our interaction with high school students, our company doubles down on our involvement because we know that maritime career awareness is paramount to bringing in our next generation of mariners.

We led the effort to develop RWD’s Prezi presentation used at all Who Works the Rivers events around the country. We maintain and update the presentation throughout the year.
This past fall we helped plan and participate in RWD’s Who Works the Rivers events at the Port of New Orleans. Two back-to-back events were held and on November 15th 200 students from Jefferson Parish were in attendance and approximately 150 students from New Orleans were in attendance on November 16. Currently, we are helping RWD plan 2 Who Works the Rivers events at the Port of South Louisiana on March 14th and March 23rd. We are also working with RWD to plan and participate in a Maritime Day at NOMMA on February 14th and an event with Jr. Achievement on March 7, where will work together as an industry to have an impact at the event with 4,000 freshman students from the Greater New Orleans Area.
On March 22nd, Turn Services will host RWD for their first advisory council meeting.
A “Did You Know” fact or a tidbit on careers related to the waterways industry:
Mariners on the Mississippi River assist in moving over 500 million tons annually and are important to feeding the world. If a 2023 high school graduate decided to become a deckhand upon graduation, the individual could become a captain in five years earning over $120,000. If I was a graduating senior, I would say sign me up so by 2028 I had such an amazing career path. Through the Who Works the River events, we give thousands of students exposure to our maritime careers.

GIVE US SOME GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR COMPANY (WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED OR OPERATE IN, HOW MANY EMPLOYEES, ETC.):
Headquartered in Chattanooga, TN at MM 467 on the Tennessee River. Southern Marine (SMC) was started in 1962 in response to local towboat operating companies desiring minor installation and repairs to marine structures in the river. Being near the upper end of the river mobilization is a big factor on smaller jobs. SMC specializes on construction projects going out into the river, this could be pipelines, conveyors, water intakes, barge docks, piers, marine ways, travel lifts, demolition, salvage, rip-rap. Anything and everything from the top of the river bank down. After gradually growing down the Tennessee River then up the Ohio River we have firmily established ourselves in what we consider to be our geographical work area, the rivers in all of Tennessee, all of Kentucky and half of all the surrounding states. We now consider Paducah and Cincinnati to be home ports along with Chattanooga when determining mobilization charges. SMC has five crane barges with 100 ton crawler cranes, support barges (12), switch boats (6) and one heavy lift Derrick (165 tons). Four independent crews man our projects, the goal is to keep four different projects happening at all times. Each crew has 6 – 12 employees depending on where construction has progressed. High water, low water, winter storms, summer thunder, heat, cold, short days, holidays, breakdowns, overhauls, travel times, all conspire to keep us from meeting our goal. But we soldier on knowing there is nothing like completion of a job well done! Then on to the next one.
RECENT EVENT /HIGHLIGHT/COMPANY ACCOMPLISHMENT:
Recently SMC commissioned a new crane barge to replace a crane barge that has been in service for many years. Recently completed projects include barge docks, or barge dock repairs, for Marathon Petroleum in Louisville, Consolidated Grain & Barge in Tunica and Osceola on the Mississippi River, dredging and spud piles for a marina on the river in downtown Chattanooga and a 48” diameter outfall line into the Ohio River for Domtar Paper near Hawesville, KY.
YEAR YOU BECAME A RIVERWORKS DISCOVERY SPONSOR:
SMC became a Riverworks Discovery Sponsor in 2012.
QUOTE ON HOW OR WHY YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH RWD:
RWD impresses me because their mission is so closely aligned to what we as a group in the marine industry already know. The rivers are most cost effective, most fuel efficient, and a most “green” way to transport large quantities of products both long and short distances. This message needs to be told and explained to the public, exactly what RWD is doing in an effective manner.
HIGHLIGHT RECENT RWD EVENT OR SPONSORSHIP THAT YOU WERE INVOLVED WITH:
SMC has sponsored river cruises for school kids in the Chattanooga area for the past two years. The cruise boat is owned and operated by the Tennessee Aquarium and is a water jet powered catamaran capable of speeds over 50 mph with a passenger load of 67 people plus crew. Last year 442 students went on a river cruise, plus adult chaperones. This helps the TN Aquarium also, keeps the boat running during the winter months when slow. The students get a barge industry handout fact sheet, that SMC has printed, and a narrator explains everything as the boat goes down the river past the barge docks and fleeting areas to the TN River Gorge. I’m sure this is a “field” trip these lucky kids will remember for most of their lives.
“DID YOU KNOW” FACT OR TIDBIT ON CAREERS RELATED TO WATERWAYS INDUSTRY:
SMC is a construction company doing marine work at different installations along the river, when the construction barges are being moved along the river the crews are at home resting up for the next job. The trades we are most interested in hiring are Welders who can eventually become certified and Crane Operators who can eventually obtain their CCO Certificate (Certified Crane Operator) .

AEP River Operations is one of the largest inland river barge companies in the United States, transporting over 65 million tons annually. This includes the movement of grain, project cargo, coal, steel, ores, liquids, and other bulk products. The current fleet includes more than 79 towboats ranging from 1,550 to 11,000 horsepower and over 2,900 hopper barges. Company headquarters are located in Chesterfield, Missouri. AEP River Operations has fleeting services in Convent and Algiers, Louisiana and a shipyard in Belle Chasse, Louisiana. Crew and operations offices are located in Paducah, Kentucky and Lakin, West Virginia.
RECENT EVENT /HIGHLIGHT/COMPANY ACCOMPLISHMENT:
AEP River Operations launched the first of 20 tank barges at Jeffboat in Jeffersonville, Indiana on January 30, 2014. The new barges will all be 10,000-barrel, externally-framed units designed for clean chemicals and will feature barge tops that greatly exceed the industry standard. The barge, at 35 by 200 by 12.5 feet, can be easily integrated into any of AEP’s tows. Heavily built, it weighs approximately 424 tons and has three cargo tanks with a combined capacity of 11,000 barrels, five wing tanks, a rake void and a stern void. The voids were strengthened and have extra vents so that ballast water can be added to temporarily increase the barge’s draft if necessary. The cargo tanks have “six-pound tops,” so named because they can withstand pressures of 6.4 pounds-per-square-inch before venting. The number is double what is most often found on the river, and will result in greater safety and minimal emissions, in keeping with AEP’s established record of environmental stewardship.
BECAME A RIVERWORKS DISCOVERY SPONSOR IN 2004:
The program was created in 2004 by AEP River Operations, and due to its exponential growth and success the program was gifted to the Museum in 2010.

QUOTE ON HOW OR WHY YOU ARE INVOLVED WITH RWD:
Ingram is committed to remaining an industry leader in environmental stewardship, and we love teaching those in our communities about barging – the safest, most energy-efficient mode of transportation. In addition, we work with other industry organizations to reach citizens and our policymakers to ensure the vitality of our rivers, locks and dams for anyone who currently enjoys, recreationally, or who works on the nation’s rivers, but also for generations to come. It’s important that when policymakers are dealing with river issues that the public understands the issues and supports river use. Ours goals align with the goals of RiverWorks Discovery to educate children and their families about the commerce, culture, and conservation of the great rivers and their watersheds. And when children learn to care for our waterways, they will naturally share this love with their families.
